I had a few people asking how I created some of my recent digital art, so I figured Id post a little tutorial. If you are already familiar with Photoshop this should be pretty easy.
First of all, you will need to get the program Adobe Photoshop if you dont already own it. I recommend Photoshop 7 or newer.. Im using CS3 myself(version 10 I think.) The newer the version you have the more brushes that will be compatible. It may be possible to do this with other programs, but this is the only one I am personally familiar with.
Step 1:
You can get brushes(they are very much like stamps) from many sources. You can even make your own. I get mine from a website called DeviantArt -- www.deviantart.com/
Go to the category button near the top left. Click on it then go to..
Resources > Application Resources > Photoshop Brushes
Step 2:
You now have all the brushes from the DeviantArt site in one area. You shouldnt run into any photos, poetry etc here. Use the search box on the right to look for a certain genre or specific brush that you would like. For example, you can type "cats" in and currently 43 different brush packs pop up. You can get better results by choosing the options "Popular" and then "All-Time."
Step 3:
Click on of the previews that look interesting. You will see that many of the search results will actually have a few different brushes to make up a set. There is no way to download just 1 of the brushes from the set, but you can delete the unliked ones later in Photoshop. Read the rules below the preview if there are any.. Most artists will ask that you show them what you create with the brushes, but there are many that let you run wild as well. Respect the artists and their wishes.
Step 4:
When you find a set that looks interesting, hit the "Download" button on the left. Choose "Save to Disk." I send mine to my desktop and then do any unzipping if there are compressed files. Take the .ABR brush file and put in a folder somewhere where you wont be moving it.
Step 5:
Open Adobe Photoshop. Start a new project. Click on the brush tool. Along the top left you will see a little arrow in a circle.. Click that, then the next arrow, then "Load Brushes." Find the brush you just downloaded and pick it. It is now added to your brush shapes!
Step 6:
Go to the top and open your "Window" option. Check on "Brushes" and a new window will appear with all your brush shapes. Your new one always loads at the bottom. Choose a colour that is different from your new project and stamp one of your new shapes.
Thats the basics of how to get brushes loaded up and working. Colouring, layering and all that other fun stuff is for you to experiment with. Enjoy!
