This is lovely work, Ghost. It's late and I'm tired, so will return tomorrow with a better comment.

I’m not sure the use of “forsake’d is correct. The tense seems out of place.
That’s it. I can’t see anything else I’d consider changing. Excellent write and your word choices are impressive. Seriously, this is contest entry good. Miscellaneous? The title and the last strophe place this solidly in the melancholy board.

As for poetry contests - My opinion is, don't bother. I've entered two. One was in Jr. high. Those actually do some good by getting kids interested in creative writing. The other was World Poetry Movement (or something like that). It's apparently a legit organization but they ripped me off for $50 or $60 bucks. They put out a book each year of all the contest winners poems. They wrote me and said my poem "Summers" made it in so I bought a copy and never received it or an answer to my inquiries. I saw it being sold on Amazon but I'll be damned if they get another dollar from me.
Guess I'm not that competitive. - It's not about competition. It's another outlet for sharing our work.
She approached me expressing a deep connection with my poem. Meant alot. - It does and you touched a soft spot in me with this one. Wish you were here isn't just the name of a favorite album by Pink Floyd. It's a lifelong motto for me too.
Thanks for sharing.

Maybe you could start a new thread, spiritscar, and I'll delete this one.
