Interning was about making a name for yourself in the industry. I say was because it doesn’t seem to work that way anymore. Some industries like the medical profession seem to think you have to work a year for free before you deserve to be paid. Writing is definitely one you have to make a name in before you get paid. J. K. Rowling got paid didly-squat for her first book.
Open stage readings are just that, open stage. It’s kind of like karaoke night, no one expects much.

i may be wrong but i dont believe the UK has internships...not to pay somone for work is illegal, though that said IF you volunteer thats a different matter..i personnaly have never come across it over here as for poetry readings, years ago before i started trying to write 'proper poetry' i done a number of open MC sessions at pubs an clubs, no one got paid no one cared, they wos fun i went to 1 poetry night about 18 months ago, open mic, i never read anything, again all voluntary amatuer poets. TBH it wos full of real stereotypes, ermm up-their-own-arse-students-who-you-just-wanted-to-punch-in-the-face, those that put people off poetry...so never been to one since anyways so interships i disagree with, everyone should be paid for a job of work, even at a reduced 'training level' rate, FFS even minimunm wages LOL as for unheard of artists...whose gonna pay them ? wheres the money gonna come from ? like a unsigned band, its the same deal..get known, get a following and then only then, somone might sign you up, then you might get a bit of money
