Collard pencils and chalk have always been my favorite medias. I don't think I could quite fill a milk crate with all I have but I got a lot of them short and long. I've never come close to the quality of these. These are professional quality.
The Uriel/human drawing was done with Faber castell pencils, which are great. For Johnny, used a mix of Faber and Derwent graphics.. wolf's carbons, too. The Derwent pencils are ok but I found the graphite too hard when i first used them, and could see it denting the paper. Had to experiment with them a lot before this drawing.. For small details, they're great because of their hardness; they keep a sharp point. Faber, for me personally, are the favourites. Only need to use two or three pencils and can still get fantastic range on depth and shading. I'm rambling, but hope it helps if you decide to try new pencils. Have you posted some of your art here?
Thanks Ama
I'll try to remember to look for Faber pencils the next time I go looking. I remember rummaging around for art materials. I ended up with a lot of pencils and half of them should have been thrown away. The one set I have found is one of those. LOL
It was the paints and brushes that got really expensive and complicated. I got real good at shaping my own brushes. I was using them for canvas, models, statuettes, and anything else I could get my brushes on. I always liked to blend and fade colors so I got good at birds and butterflies. I put some incredible detail into my models. Using a brush to apply chalk was a neat trick a guy in a model shop told me about when I noticed the detail on his displays. An airbrush is a must for models.
I like pencils the most though. I started carrying a sketch pad and pencils in one of those clipboards with a small storage compartment. They are cheap, very portable, and the best for blending color. For all that, most of my drawings have been a #2 pencil, and half of those where probably on school desktops. I started early in grade school and was so board in my high school years my drawings got a lot of attention. Many teachers actually let some of them stay till the end of the semester.
I feel like I'm starting from square one but I'm remembering the techniques again as I scribble. I posted a couple recent drawings here;
