"... the short story is coined from precious metal, a glint of gold that will glow for ever in the deep purse of your imagination." Ballard, Introduction, The Completete Short Stories.
Not reading much at the moment except *The complete Short Stories of JG Ballard*, who happens to be one of my favourite contemporary authors. In this 1186-page anthology, which contains 96 stories from the years 1956 to 1992, Ballard's penchant for surrealistic prose embracing time, entropy, decadence, obsession and the unlikely pursuit of transcendence in the face of apocalyptic disaster is showcased with a vengeance.
I've read most of the stories before in other collections by the author, but this is the first time they've appeared under one roof, as it were. If you've never read anything by this highly acclaimed English writer, this book is a good place to start.

Stephen King..I'm on the third in the Dark tower collection. He is good reading if you don't want to think to much.....sometimes thats perfect because I tend to think ALOT...
Also, Anne Rice
Especially her erotica....like Belinda and the Beauty series.
I was reading Marquise De Sade...now theres and interesting character...... and I thought i was perverted

The sade you simply must love the man, check out "philosophy in the budoir" and "crimes of love" anne rice is awsome as her pseudonym which escapes me at the momment, the beauty series is incredible erotica. The marqui is without doubt the father of it all...

Since you all seem to be mad about the Marquis De Sade, how many of you have seen Pier Paolo Pasolini's film Salò or The 120 Days of Sodom? I recently went to see Michael Haneke's Funny Games, which I found quite unnerving despite the fact that the violence could only be heard off camera, but Salo really excels in the shock department and had the audience fleeing the cinema in droves.

Slight misunderstanding here, MORNINGSTAR. Salò and The 120 Days of Sodom are one and the same film.
Yes, the other movies you mentioned sound interesting enough to check out (which I will), but I doubt I'll ever get to see anything as disgusting and putrid as Salò again. I mean, I actually saw someone throw up halfway through the film as she tried to make good her escape. My three friends and I bravely held out till the end, though, and were rewarded in the finale with the most sickening scene in the whole damn movie, as far as I'm concerned.
But I digress. We were talking about books ...

I saw the film at an independent movie theatre in Germany some time ago. And I'm not pulling your leg, littlewhip. Somebody really did throw up!
